Summer in Hilton Head Island means long days on the beach. You might think almost nothing can ruin a day at the beach and that's almost true. As professional beach bums, we know with just a little planning and packing all of the essentials you'll set yourself up for the perfect day of fun in the sun. From our years of sandy summer experiences, we put together your ultimate list of beach essentials for the perfect summer getaway.
We love reef safe options, but anything SPF 30 and above should work great. Don’t forget to grab your Chapstick with SPF and (most importantly) remember to reapply. SPF is an indication of how frequently you need to reapply, but that is significantly reduced by getting in and out of the water, drying off with towels, and sweating. Apply before heading outside and reapply often.
Pro tip: Make sure to put sunscreen on your ears, the tops of your feet, and the back of your neck. Nothing ruins a great summer beach trip like a blistering sunburn.
A floppy hat, a bucket hat, a trucker hat, a baseball cap… Give your sunscreen a boost by topping off your beach look with your favorite hat. We love a solid baseball cap, but the options are endless. We have all your favorite styles available at the Pantry, located at the Front Desk.
Sunglasses are obvious but important. Make sure your sunglasses block 100% of both UVA and UVB rays. Not only will you be protecting your eyesight, but you’ll also be a lot more comfortable enjoying our sunshine-filled summer days.
Now that the safety necessities are out of the way let's go to the good stuff. Beach reads are an absolute necessity if you ask us. Grab your favorite book to re-read, browse the bestseller lists, or pick up one of our recent favorites
By Invitation Only a novel by Dorothea Benton Frank
A delightful novel of a young couple, one from the upper echelon of Chicago and the other raised on a South Carolina peach farm, By Invitation Only, is the perfect beach read for your Hilton Head Island getaway. The story opens at an engagement party taking place right here in the Lowcountry before heading to Chicago and diving deep into what it means to be truly happy and how one might change their lives if the invitation only presented itself.
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt
If you haven’t read Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, now is the perfect opportunity. Written like a novel, this work of creative nonfiction takes you back in time to 1981 in Savannah, Georgia and the 10-years following. Moss covered oak trees, an eclectic group of characters and a rare murder case, Berendt’s 1994 debut novel combines fact with fiction in an at once thrilling and enthralling story of the Old South.
We have pool towels covered for you if you’re staying at the Beach House, but don’t forget to bring your favorite beach towel and a lightweight blanket! Choose the perfect spot on our 12-miles of white sand beach and soak up the sun.
If sitting on the sand doesn’t sound like your idea of a good time, a beach chair might be the perfect way for you to enjoy the sand and surf. Our guest-only beach area has lounge chairs for overnight guests, you can rent chairs and umbrellas to use on the public beach area, or bring your own! A collapsible beach chair can be a game changer during a long day of fun in the sun.
Wet / Dry bags are an inexpensive and useful way to keep your valuables safer from the elements and stay organized. We always recommend leaving valuables stored in a safe place, but if you do decide to bring your cell phone, car keys, or other items to the beach, having a place to keep them dry and sand-free is a requirement. Zip-loc bags are a great option and you probably already have them hanging around the house. Pack a couple in your luggage – you’ll be surprised at how useful they are at the beach!
Staying hydrated is non-negotiable at the beach, but there’s nothing worse than swallowing a mouthful of hot water that’s been baking in the sun for hours. Grab an insulated water bottle, fill up at the beginning of the day, and enjoy cool water for hours. We love HydroFlask, S’well, Klean Kanteen, and Thermos but you can find insulated water bottles almost anywhere.
If you are going to bring your smartphone to the beach, keep your Instagram worthy photos safe by investing in a waterproof case for your phone. Smartphones are expensive, and the sand and surf don’t mix well with electronics.
Speakers are one item you don’t have to worry about packing. Not only are they against the local regulations but you also don’t need them. Live music starts at the Tiki Hut at 1:00 pm every day, featuring talented local and traveling musicians. Before the music begins, enjoy the sounds of seagulls overhead and waves crashing on the beach. Trust us – Queen Bey can stay at home for a few days.
